Back Into Full BEAM! Five Ways to Reconnect with Yourself

In my role as an Executive Coach, I've worked with hundreds of brilliant clients, and one thing I know for certain is this: none of them need fixing.

The individuals I coach are already wildly capable. They lead high-performing teams, run businesses, households, and family calendars. They keep organisations afloat while juggling ageing parents, school runs, and the never-ending list of things everyone else is relying on them to remember.

Yet so many arrive in coaching telling me that what they lack is confidence.

In my experience, confidence is rarely the real issue at all. It's usually the noise. Being needed all the time. Trying to keep everybody happy; carrying endless expectations on their shoulders.

Every day I meet driven humans who are more than ready for their next step yet hesitating. Professionals holding everything together for everyone else, wondering, in the back of their mind: when does it get to be my turn?

If somewhere along the way you've lost sight of yourself, underneath the noise, pressure and responsibility, here's how you can start reconnecting with yourself, again - and what genuine personal and professional development and lasting change can look like when you do.

1. What if you allowed yourself to want more?

It's so easy to build a life around what's practical, sensible, and convenient for everybody else. Way harder to stop and ask:

What would it look like for me to really thrive? Not just cope brilliantly while everyone tells me how amazing I am. To really thrive.

We have one life! This is not a rehearsal.

I want you to ask yourself this. If nobody else's opinion mattered, what would you be brave enough to admit you wanted?

2. Braver boundaries

People-pleasing is exhausting.

Many of us don't notice how much of our energy disappears into sorting out everybody else, first. We cringe at the thought of setting boundaries, thinking it makes us look cold or difficult. It's the opposite. Boundaries are not about keeping others out, they're about protecting your time and energy so you can show up fully, without feeling resentful. Healthy boundaries equal healthy relationships - and healthier, higher-performing teams.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is this:

"No, that doesn't work for me."

Do you feel uncomfortable reading that sentence?

Hold the line because with practice comes a growing ability to say no. Be honest, where could you become braver at setting boundaries?

3. Your weird bits are your best bits (honestly)

Many clients have spent years editing themselves, shrinking down the brilliant parts of their personality to blend in and appear more likeable. Yet what we often hide are the things that make us interesting and magnetic. Your unique story, your voice, your funny quirks, these are the things that make you memorable. Authenticity is a superpower, so lean into yours.

And stop trying to blend in and be everyone's cup of tea when you were born to be a fabulous cocktail.

4. Be your own best mate

How you speak to yourself matters.

So many of us are walking around with an internal critic sounding like a Year 9 bully. Would you speak to your best mate the way you speak to yourself after one awkward meeting or a mistake at work?

Many of the stories we carry around about ourselves are old. Really old. Yet they still shape our decisions, confidence, and relationships, years later without us even realising.

The first step is noticing that voice. Question it, challenge it, then start speaking to yourself with the same kindness and compassion you so freely give to everybody else.

5. Perfectionism is the enemy of growth

Most of us wait until we feel completely confident before we take the leap.

This is not about becoming fearless. It's about backing yourself a little bit more, choosing courage over comfort in small, messy growth moments. It's about ditching perfectionism and giving yourself permission to work it out as you go along. Because the life you want is not waiting for a perfect version of you. It's waiting for the brave one - and real, lasting change rarely arrives fully formed.

Reconnecting with yourself isn't a one-off event - it's a practice, and it starts the moment you decide you're worth the same care you give everyone else.

Here's to backing yourself a little braver, a little sooner.
